Recently, we had some special visitors at the reception center on Joseph Haydnlaan: the Opportunity Creation Team from the Province of Utrecht!

We were asked if there was anything we could do to support the residents, something that would really benefit them. It can sometimes be difficult for residents of an asylum seekers’ center to get to know people from outside the center. That is why we at Welkom in Utrecht try to build bridges between people living in asylum seekers’ centers and other residents of Utrecht. So this day was mainly about meeting people!

What really helps newcomers in the Netherlands is practicing the Dutch language. So, the Kansenmakers organized a language walk through the beautiful Oog in Al neighborhood together with newcomers. They practiced Dutch words, got to know the neighborhood, and, above all, got to know each other!

And afterwards, it was time for games! Because Jenga requires no language, and the language of chess transcends many boundaries.
