Ukrainian varenyky workshop brings people together in the HerculesHoek
Recently, the cozy meeting place De HerculesHoek was filled with warmth, laughter, and the delicious smell of homemade Ukrainian food during our traditional Ukrainian Varenyky Workshop. Ukrainian participants and Dutch neighbors gathered around tables to make varenyky—traditional stuffed dumplings—together.
During the workshop, three types of filling were offered: mashed potatoes, salty quark, and sweet cherries—for both savory and sweet lovers.
“It was so nice to see how involved our Dutch guests were in the cooking,” said participant Natalia. “We were happy to share a piece of our culture with them. The atmosphere was really great! We even got to practice a little Dutch.”
After preparing dozens of varenyky together, all participants enjoyed a shared meal to sample their culinary skills.
For many, the workshop was not only about food, but also about connection. “Participating in a workshop like this is so much better than just sitting in your room with nothing to do,” shared Nadiia. “Thank you very much.”
It was an evening filled with cultural exchange, delicious flavors, and meaningful conversations—proof that cooking together can bring people closer.
