Coffee Ceremony with Alliander
Sometimes encounters are so beautiful and special and don’t really require much except good coffee and an eye for each other!
On October 10, employees of the company Alliander visited us to get to know the residents of the asylum center.
Our wonderful intern Luli from Eritrea and volunteer Mahlet from Ethiopia made coffee with a ceremony that is very common in Eritrea and Ethiopia.
The coffee beans are first roasted and then ground and then a whole ritual follows, all to make the coffee as special as possible for your guests!
Normally, you don’t let your guests go without three cups of coffee, freshly baked popcorn and, of course, injera is always eaten.
Hospitality is so important, because imagine your guest going home hungry, there’s no way! It was a fun entry to talk about cultural differences and there was plenty of that. We also decorated cupcakes with each other and laughter rolled over the table. Seeing each other and understanding where the other is coming from is so important!
This meeting was also made possible by the always helpful A Beautiful Mess and by Tanya from NL Cares who brought us together!
